About this work

This etching depicts a dimly lit interior with wooden bookshelves filled with books, hanging lamps, and wooden chairs with stacked papers in the foreground. A handwritten note at the bottom describes the site as 70 rue de Vaugirard, Institut catholique, a former Carmelite convent dating to 1613, where in 1890 Doctor Edouard Branly discovered the principle of wireless telegraphy. The work is attributed to Georges-Henri Manesse.
