About this work

This etching shows a dim, sparsely furnished room with a mullioned window on the left, a stone arch dividing the space, and a fireplace on the right beside an open doorway. Light falls across the uneven floorboards, and the walls and ceiling are rendered in dense hatched lines. The print is by Georges-Henri Manesse, dated 1906, and its inscription identifies the room as the Hôtel meublé de Francfort in Rue d'Argout, where Charlotte Corday slept the night before Marat's assassination.
