About this work

This watercolor view shows the old facade of the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris, with blackened Gothic arches and a classical colonnade beside a newer stone building with dormer windows. Figures, a horse-drawn cart, a rider and a market stall animate the street, and the twin towers of Notre-Dame rise in the background. The work is attributed to Auguste-Sébastien Bénard and is titled as a view after the 1772 fire.
