About this work

A dramatic tournament scene shows two armored knights charging on horseback past a wooden barrier, one lance splintering against the other rider. Half-timbered buildings with pointed gothic arches and crowds of spectators in a wooden gallery frame the action, while a tall stone column rises at left. The work is a 1906 print by Édouard Detaille titled after the death of King Henri II at the Hôtel des Tournelles tournament.
