About this work

This painting by Josef Püttner, dated 1864, shows a dramatic view of Niagara Falls under a heavy, stormy sky with a shaft of light breaking through the clouds. Foaming water pours over the broad cataracts into a churning green pool, while a small boat and a standing figure on the rocks give a sense of scale. Wind-bent trees and a distant tower and building frame the scene on either side.
