About this work
This oil painting by Paolo Sala, dated 1899, shows a busy London street scene before the Royal Exchange, with its colonnaded classical portico and sculpted pediment. Horse-drawn carriages, a red omnibus and crowds of pedestrians fill the sunlit roadway in loose, painterly brushwork.
