About this work

A richly colored painting shows a woman in a flowing golden gown and jeweled headdress holding a golden platter that bears a severed head. Beside her, a smiling shirtless man in dark drapery lifts the head by the hair, while a black panther crouches at the lower right near a curved blade on the steps. The work is attributed to Gustaaf Vanaise, signed and dated 1895 in the lower right corner, and is held by Wikimedia Commons.
