About this work

This lithograph by Horace Vernet, dated 1828, shows a richly dressed turbaned figure seated on a carpet beside a hookah while attendants stand nearby. Behind a stone parapet, a musket-armed soldier fires toward a crowd below, with smoke rising before a fortress with round towers and a minaret. The caption beneath the image identifies the event as the massacre of the rebel Mamluks at the Cairo citadel on 1 March 1811.
