About this work

This black-and-white engraving by Bartolomeo Pinelli, dated 1819, shows a commanding figure in Roman military dress gesturing forward while a column of soldiers with spears, shields and military horns stands behind him. A stone pillar inscribed with the word RUBICONE and the letters XVIIII B P Q R marks the scene, with mountains and trees in the background. The caption identifies the subject as Caesar crossing the Rubicon, the small river that marked the border of his province.
