This oil study shows the head of a young boy turned upward, his eyes gazing toward the upper left with lips parted. The painting is a study for the figure of the guide in Ingres's composition Homer and His Guide. The panel is worked in warm flesh tones, reddish-brown hair, and a muted green ground.
