About this work
Albert Maignan's painting La Fortune passe shows a nude, blindfolded female figure with flowing hair, holding a staff and extending her arm as she descends a broad flight of stone steps past classical columns. A wheel rolls beneath her while coins scatter across the steps, and a crowd of men in top hats and bowler hats reads newspapers or reaches toward her. The composition contrasts the allegorical figure of fortune with the bustling, modern-dressed public on a grand civic staircase.
