About this work
A standing Native American man on a rocky outcrop raises a dark cloth against a cloudy sky, signaling toward the plains below. Companions with horses and a seated figure holding a rifle appear nearby, while tipis and a winding river lie in the valley beneath the mesas. The painting is signed "Wm. M. Cary" and dated 1885 in the lower left corner.
