About this work

A lithograph shows a winter prairie scene in which a hunter on snowshoes pursues bison across a snowy slope, while a large wounded bison in the foreground bleeds from its mouth and nose onto the snow. Further off, a herd of bison and two more hunters on snowshoes move along a ridge beneath a pale sky. This print by George Catlin, dated 1865, is titled Buffalo Hunt on Snow Shoes from his North American Indian Portfolio.
