About this work
This engraved title page for a map of the Kingdom of France features an elaborate ornamental cartouche with putti holding crowns, a royal crown above a shield bearing fleurs-de-lis, and mythical birds with serpent tails at the base. The central text names Louis XIII as dedicatee and credits the map to N. Sanson d'Abbeville, geographer to the king, dated 1653. The engraving is attributed to François Chauveau in the plate.
