About this work
A monochrome ink and wash sketch shows a seated man in a light coat and a top hat, bent over a flat work surface with his head lowered. The dark, loose brushwork behind him contrasts with the pale figure, and an inscription beneath reads 'gravant une plaque - Toulouse', with the signature 'A. Roucolle 1873' at lower right. The work is attributed to Jean-Baptiste Cariven and dated 1873.
