About this work

An oil painting in an ornate carved gilt frame shows an older man in a dark coat, pale breeches and a black top hat seated on a bay horse in an open landscape. Behind him, hunters in red coats ride with hounds across a grassy slope beside a leafless tree. The plaque on the frame reads that the sitter was Samuel Dumbleton, in his 85th year, whipper-in to the Earl Spencer's Pytchley hounds, and that the work is by J. Ferneley, 1834.
