About this work
This painting shows a lively village fair with peasants dancing, drinking, and socializing beneath large trees in front of a thatched inn. A horseback rider, a mother nursing an infant, and several dogs animate the crowded foreground, while a church tower and a town gate appear in the distant road. The work is attributed to Jan Steen and dated 1676.
