About this work

A laughing man with long, tousled brown hair sits at a table playing a lute, its pear-shaped body glowing orange against his dark jacket and white shirt cuffs. A sheet of music rests on the table at left, and a plain grey background fills the rest of the composition. The painting is attributed to Jan Steen and dated 1664, and its title, Self-Portrait with a Lute: Sense of Hearing, points to the musical theme.
