About this work

Branches of Cherokee Roses, a work by Martin Johnson Heade dated 1883, shows clusters of white five-petalled blossoms with yellow centres among glossy green leaves and rose buds. Several flowers are rendered in loose pencil outline or pale wash at the margins, suggesting preparatory study alongside the finished painted sprays. The pale grey-beige ground leaves much of the canvas unpainted.
