About this work
Two hummingbirds are shown in a misty, muted landscape, one perched on a branch and the other with fanned tail and iridescent green throat hovering near a large nest on a mossy bough. The overcast palette of greys and browns contrasts with the bright green and violet touches on the bird. This print, titled White-vented Violet-ear from The Gems of Brazil, is attributed to Martin Johnson Heade and dated 1863.
