About this work
Carl Spitzweg's painting The Astronomer, dated 1860, shows a crouching man in period dress peering up through a long telescope mounted on a wooden tripod. A second figure in a dark hat and robe stands behind him in a dim interior, and a window at right reveals a blue night sky with stars.
