About this work
A seated woman with loose golden hair holds an unrolled scroll in both hands, her gaze turned aside within a stone chamber. A barred window lets in pale light behind her, and the red-tiled floor and carved wooden bench complete the enclosed setting. This is Evelyn De Morgan's The Soul's Prison House, dated 1880.
