About this work
This painting, titled Pan and Syrinx and attributed to Jacob Jordaens, shows a horned satyr-like figure pursuing a nude nymph who flees through tall reeds while clutching a red drape. In the foreground a reclining male figure with a flower crown holds a pipe beside a spilling jug, and a companion figure in a turban watches from a shaded rocky grotto. A wide landscape with distant village buildings opens to the right under a cloudy sky.
