About this work
This engraved print titled The Calm after Joseph Vernet, dated 1750, shows a harbor scene with a stone tower beside a pier, moored sailing ships, and a rowboat near a rocky cliff. Fishermen and figures in the foreground gather on the shore beneath a cloudy sky. The composition is rendered in fine line engraving with dense hatching across the water and rock.
