About this work
A hand-colored engraving shows Indigenous people in a wooded clearing handing over young children to a seated officer in a red coat and tricorn hat, while a clerk writes beside him. A kneeling woman in a yellow and pink dress reaches toward a child, and onlookers and tents appear among the trees.
