About this work

An engraved allegorical scene shows a helmeted, seated female figure with a shield and spear receiving a book labeled Lusiad from a kneeling man in classical dress. Above them, a winged figure reclines on a cloud beside a trumpet, while a domed classical building appears on a rise to the right. The print is inscribed Published as the Act directs April 21, 1778, and credits J. Mortimer as designer and etcher.
