About this work

An etching titled Revengeful Monsters by John Hamilton Mortimer shows grotesque hybrid creatures struggling in churning waters, with a muscular figure with a crested mane grappling a horned beast while a serpent coils around a scaled monster. The fine hatched linework and caricatured faces give the scene a satirical, fantastical character.
