About this work

This hand-coloured satirical print shows a huge open-mouthed figure in a red and green uniform swallowing a French officer and troops, while small soldiers scramble below. Handwritten captions and printed labels, including the title line, frame the scene as political caricature. The work is attributed to John Cawse and dated 1799.
