About this work

This etched frontispiece shows a seated boy in a feathered cap pointing toward a large inscribed stone tablet, with a turbaned older man behind him among rocks, foliage and scattered tools. The tablet reads as a dedication to Sir Joshua Reynolds, President of the Royal Academy, signed by John Hamilton Mortimer and dated 1778, and it introduces the series of fifteen etchings.
