About this work

A watercolor and pencil drawing shows an armored knight with a plumed helmet gripping a tall sword, his gauntleted hand raised before a crowd of onlookers. Behind him a hilltop town of towers and walls rises under a pale sky, while figures at the lower right kneel and gesture in apparent awe. Richard Dadd produced this sketch in 1854 as a study for the Passions series, and the inscription at the base cites a line from Shakespeare.
