About this work
A watercolor titled A Cat and Chickens by Newton Smith Fielding, dated 1833, shows a black and white cat stalking a group of hens and a rooster on a straw-strewn barnyard floor. A three-legged wooden stool, a pitchfork, a dark bottle, a wicker basket and a red dish lie among the straw, while a hen perches on a rail at upper right. The loose, feathery brushwork and muted earth tones give the scene a rustic, everyday character.
