About this work

A pale ink and watercolor drawing shows a horse in profile with a tapering tail and a raised head, its body rendered in flat, blocky washes of brown. A handwritten note beneath the figure, signed Gilpin, comments that the outline was copied from a painter ignorant of a horse's form and that the neck, shoulder and other parts are disproportioned.
