About this work

A watercolor and wash drawing shows three hooded witches gathered around a bubbling cauldron over a red fire, with one witch stirring the pot with a long ladle while the other two raise their arms. The dark, smoky background and warm firelight create a dramatic nocturnal atmosphere. The work is by Mary Hoare and dated 1781, and its caption quotes the witches' incantation from Shakespeare's Macbeth.
