About this work

A pencil drawing on pale, lightly stained paper shows the head and neck of a horse wearing a bridle, with its eye and muzzle rendered in fine graphite shading. Handwritten notes in the lower left describe colour observations such as bluish lights and flesh-coloured edges, and the inscription at upper right reads "Dr. Huilbert at Newbery, Berks." The work is attributed to Sawrey Gilpin and dated 1749.
