About this work

A pencil sketch by Sawrey Gilpin titled A Gathering of Horsemen, With Coach, Tents, Flags, etc. (?a horse fair). Numerous horses and figures are gathered on open ground beside a closed carriage, a canvas tent, and tall poles bearing flags. The loose, light graphite lines leave much of the paper bare, with the scene drawn in a summary, outdoor manner.
