About this work
A black-and-white engraved illustration shows a group of villagers in traditional peasant dress gathered on a dirt path before a wooden cottage with a thatched roof. Figures in the foreground gesture and face one another as if in an argument, while others stand or watch from the background. This plate by Vladimir Makovsky dates to 1912 and appears in the illustrated complete works of Nikolai Gogol, volume 1.
