About this work
This painting, titled The Gods mourning Phaeton and attributed to Theodoor van Thulden, shows a muscular figure in red drapery raising a lightning bolt beside an eagle. A nude youth lies limp across the lap of a woman in blue and white drapery, with a laurel-crowned figure supporting him while a cherub hovers above. Mourners in dark cloaks and shadowy figures kneel in the foreground.
