About this work
A three-masted sailing ship heels hard to port as it plows through heavy, foaming waves under a dark, cloud-filled sky. A rocky headland rises at the right, and a second vessel appears on the distant horizon. This hand-colored engraving by Thomas Daniell, dated 1810, is titled Gale off the Cape of Good Hope and comes from A Picturesque Voyage to India.
