About this work
This painting, attributed to the Master of the Von Groote Adoration, depicts the Nativity with the Virgin Mary kneeling beside the infant Christ in a stone manger, attended by two kneeling angels. Shepherds in period dress gather at the right, one playing a bagpipe, while Saint Joseph stands at the left beside an ox. The scene is set beneath a ruined Gothic arcade with a patterned checkered floor and a distant landscape.
