About this work
This sepia-toned print by Paul Sandby, dated 1781, shows a bustling carnival crowd in an open Roman piazza. An ancient obelisk rises at center, flanked by domed churches, while masked dancers, costumed figures, horsemen and a richly decorated carriage bearing a banner reading Concordia fill the foreground and street.
