About this work

This etching depicts King Lear clutching his white hair in anguish as he kneels beside the lifeless body of Cordelia, whose head rests against his shoulder. Armed soldiers with helmets and spears stand behind them, and a crown lies on the ground in the foreground. The print by James Barry, dated 1776, carries a quotation from Shakespeare's King Lear in its lower margin.
