About this work
This sepia-toned aquatint shows a timber water mill raised on wooden piers above a river, with a long covered walkway leading to a bridge and a row of rustic cottages on the right. A small boat rests at the water's edge in the foreground, beneath a broad, heavily clouded sky. The print is titled The Water Mill above the Bridge at Charenton, drawn and etched by Thomas Girtin and aquatinted by F. C. Lewis, and published in London in 1802 by J. Girtin.
