About this work

This etching shows a woman in a long striped skirt and white cap raising a broom at a man in a white nightshirt who recoils as a dog snaps at the woman's skirt. Two onlookers peer from the doorway of a thatched cottage, and a stone beehive hut stands at left beside a tree. The printed caption beneath the plate reads 'Madge. Auld Bauldy' with the attribution Act IV Scene I, published by Watt & Baillie in Leith, June 1806, with David Allan credited as inventor and etcher.
