About this work

This engraved print by John Martin, dated 1836, shows a winged angel descending through a dark, streaked sky over a vast ancient city with colonnaded temples and pyramids beside a river. Grieving figures in the foreground and dispersing crowds on the shore convey the scene of catastrophe. The plate carries a dedication inscription to the Rev. Dr. Croly beneath the image.
