About this work

This ink and wash drawing shows a wide panoramic view across an open plain toward the domed white marble mausoleum at left and a walled complex with turrets at center. Broken masonry and rubble fill the foreground, with small figures walking along a path beneath a heavy, streaked sky. William Hodges made the work in 1783.
