About this work
A pencil and wash drawing shows a seated woman in a long dress holding up a jointed wooden doll while a young child stands with outstretched arms reaching toward it. Draped curtains frame the scene, with a garden of shrubs and a basket at the right. The work is attributed to Edward Francis Burney and carries the title Illustration for The New Doll: Let me Have It in my Own Hands, with the handwritten caption in the lower margin.
