About this work

A pencil study shows a sailing boat with a tall mast and taut rigging resting on a beach beside a rowboat. A multi-storey building with small windows stands behind the vessels, and a lone figure walks along the shoreline. The sketch is signed and dated 1829 by Cornelius Varley, and a small secondary sketch of a crane or mechanism appears in the upper right.
