About this work
A seated woman in a black gown with a large white lace ruff and lace cuffs gazes directly at the viewer, her hair dressed high and adorned with jewels. A green parrot perches on a red upholstered chair beside her, pecking at cherries, and she holds cherries in one hand. The painted inscription at upper left reads Bridget Astley, Wife of Sir Norton Knatchbull, ob. 1625, and the work is attributed to Robert Peake the elder, dated 1570.
