About this work
This hand-coloured print shows a man in a red coat and tricorn hat gripping a woman's arm as she draws a blue cloak around herself beside a cottage doorway. A younger man in a blue jacket stands by a cart at left under a tree and a crescent moon. The work is credited to George Morland as painter and Bartolozzi as engraver, with the printed caption 'The Elopement' and the subtitle describing Letitia seduced from her friends under a promise of marriage.
