About this work

This coastal scene shows fishermen working with nets on a sandy shore beside a wooden rowboat, while a stone building with an arched doorway sits at the base of steep cliffs. A monastery complex with arcades and terraces perches high on the rocky slope, connected by a long arched viaduct and stairs, with hazy mountains and sailing vessels fading into the bright blue sea. The work is credited to Carl Morgenstern and dated 1843.
